Screw The Gift List! 7 Ways to Dominate Christmas at the Last Minute

Christmas is here, and many of us might be dreading rather than anticipating “the most wonderful time of the year.”  Some of you forgot that Christmas was 12/25.  I’m not sure how you did that.  It comes around the same darn time every year.   No sense in beating a dead horse, you want solutions!  You need the fast and you need them now.

How about 7 last minute gifts ideas that will cost you little to nothing.  So, instead of investing a lot of money this holiday season, why not invest a little of your time, instead?

Food

Giving the gift of good food is one of the easiest ways to make a homemade gift for your friends and family. Cookies are easy to make and to transport. If you are looking for containers, check out your local dollar store. You can often find Christmas themed Tupperware that you can use to package your cookies. Fudge is a little more complicated than cookies, but it lasts for a while, and you can make it ahead of time.  To save time buy store bought cookies.

Advanced:  Look anyone can go on the Internet and find a recipe.  We are pressed for time here people.  We need to go rogue. Go to your local store, preferably one which sells fresh baked goods and order 2 dozen of fresh cookies.  Find a snazzy container, insert cookies, and give it as a gift.

Ornaments

Making ornaments for your friends and family is a great way to celebrate this holiday season. Also, this is a great gift idea for children.  So your kid wanted an PS3 or an Xbox.  As a last minute shopper the ornament idea will be a hard sell. So this is how you sell it.  Blame Santa.  Yea you heard it right.. Blame Jolly Old Saint Nick.  Tell your kid when you see Santa it’s on…  Crisis adverted   Decorative Photo

Album or Journal

Buy a plain photo album or journal and decorate the cover with paint, photos, scrapbook paper, stickers, etc. This is a great way to take a boring gift and make it unique without spending a lot of money.   If you’re going to go this route you have to be super creative or ridiculously corny.  I’m talking channeling your inner Bob Ross or going old school Elmer’s Glue and Macaroni.

Baking Kits

If you do not want to cook, you can make baking kits for your friends and family. All you need are some glass Mason jars and the ingredients for your favorite cookies or cup of hot cocoa. This is another great idea for kids.  Trust me your son didn’t really want that PS3.  This is another tough sell, but I think you can pull it off.  This will take a bit of prep but it starts with you saying   “real men don’t play video games” then you having about 2 hours of IRON CHEF ready for your kid to watch.

Your Time

This gift doesn’t cost a thing! Offer to donate your time and/or your skills to someone for Christmas. You can even make coupons like “Good for 1 hour of yard work” or “Good for 1 free car wash.” Be creative!  Anyone who complains about this gift is a jerk and didn’t deserve this ultimate present.  If any objection is raised to this gift you must and I stress the word must.  You must yell at the top of your lungs “ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED, AM I NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU”  Then storm out. For additional effect cross your arms and stomp your feet.

Marble or Bottle Cap Magnets

These gifts are fun and very easy to make. They make great stocking stuffers. All you need are some marbles or bottle caps, a hot glue gun and some small craft magnets. Then all you have to do is glue the magnets to the bottle caps or marbles. They look great in sets of five or six.  Presentation is key here.  Before presenting the gift you want to make it seem as though you were forging iron for weeks.  You need to be dirty and your hands must be ashy.  To achieve maximum effect wipe oil/dirt from your car tires onto your clothes and hands.

Personalized Bulletin Board or Whiteboard

This is similar to the photo album idea, and all you need to get started is a plain bulletin board or whiteboard. You can add paint and decorations to the border or the frame of the board. With whiteboards, you can add vinyl stickers.  For further directions see the section above which references decorative photo album

  • Agreed on the food! I got the oddest request, from all people: my Mom. She actually asked for Christmas cake (you know – the brick with the candied who-knows-whats in it). She loves the stuff apparently.

    I'm dumbfounded.

    Have a great holiday!

  • Great list. I also agree on the food. This weekend my parents have asked us to bring ice cream (we make homemade) and hummus. They love the stuff. Good thing for us it costs pennies to make both so we are great too.

I have also done the baking jars. They work out so well. I have done cookies, muffins, and biscuits. I have also done soups and rice mixes. Really the sky is your limit with these and they don't cost a lot to make either.

Hope you have a great weekend with your family.

  • This is a great list – and I have friends here who really do it. Well, some of it. I have already started baking (well all my work is put away for ten days or so except the blogging fun).

Merry Christmas, YFS, and have a good one.

  • What are you baking this holiday season?

  • Nice post! This year my mom donated $50 for us to cook and prepare Christmas dinner. First time she did this… Lol…
